Impact: Demolished the derrick and created a large crater. Became a major tourist attraction, with people even rowing on the oil lake. Caused oil prices to drop by half due to market saturation. Workers built earthen dams to contain the flow, but much oil was lost to the ground. Legacy: The site is marked by California Historical Landmark No. 485, and remnants of the oil-soaked ground are still visible today.
